Chesapeake Chats Ep 1: John Shields

We sat down with Founder and CEO Chef John Shields to kick off our new program, Chesapeake Chats! In this series, we will be interviewing local chefs, farmers, producers, and makers to learn all about them and their thoughts about the Chesapeake through a series of fun questions! It's only fitting to interview Chef John for Episode One since he is known as the Culinary Ambassador of the Chesapeake! Here's what Chef John had to say:

Question: If Chef John Shields were to prepare a three-course meal for 6 in your home, who would be joining you and what are you eating?

From John: The Magruder Gang. Maryland Crab Soup, Roast Springfield Farm Chicken, mashed potatoes and stewed greens, Mrs. Tawes 7-layer Cake for dessert.

Question: If the Chesapeake Bay were on a dating site what would be the top three qualities on its profile?

From John:

  • It’s Appearance - gorgeous.

  • Sense of Humor - the weather and tides like to play tricks on you.

  • Generous Spirit - provides a bounty of delicious food and nurtures all around it.

Question: For you, what does a perfect day on the Chesapeake look like?

From John: A hike in any of the region's State Parks.

Question: What is your favorite Chesapeake memory?

From John: Picking crabs on a shore home on Middle River as a child. Childhood crab feast memories are the best!

Question: What does being in the Chesapeake Bay region mean to you and/or your business?

From John: Provides us access to amazing food and artisan products. And a population that appreciates all the region has to offer.

Here are some of our favorite images of Chef John and the Our Common Table team enjoying all that the Chesapeake has to offer.
